We recently returned from our 2015 West Trip, during which time we visited nine states and nine campgrounds in 21 days! We enjoyed reading your comments over on the Instagram and Facebook posts that Kristin updated during our travels. But since that was just a snapshot of our adventures, we sifted through the additional few 1,700 photos to put together a short slideshow of the places we visited and campgrounds where we stayed.
Lehman’s Lakeside RV Resort, Marengo, IL
Lehman’s Lakeside RV Resort in Marengo, Ill., was the first stop of our 2015 West Trip. It was just west of Chicago with easy access off the freeway, so it was a great place to overnight on a stop over. We ran into some heavy traffic in the Chicago area–partly because we forgot about the time change and rather than avoiding rush-hour, we essentially hit is square on–and
A walk through camping history
We marked the start of our 2015 Wild West adventure with a stop at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Ind. What a fun place to visit if you are a camping enthusiast! The RV museum is home to dozens of vintage campers–many of which you can walk through. Located just off I-80, the hall of fame would make a great place to stretch your
We hit the road!
We are finally on the road headed West! So be on the lookout because you never know where you might spot us. If you haven’t followed us on Instagram and Facebook yet, be sure to do that to get updates on our West adventures. We stopped today at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Ind.–and it was such a fun visit! We’ll have more about that
Space Saving Strategies: Camper corral
During the camper’s “Weight Loss Plan” I needed a solution for storing some of the awkward and greasy items that we keep in the pass-through storage compartment of our camper. Hot-dog sticks, pie irons, and weight distribution bars don’t store well and will often get grease and soot on anything they touch. After scrolling Pinterest I thought the best solution would be to “hang” these items either
Window dressing time
I’ve got another little camper remodel project for you today: camper window curtains. This little job was well overdue. Ever since our first trip in our camper, we had discovered a design flaw in the bunkhouse: metal window blinds. The blinds are problematic for two reasons. 1) Little hands bend the blinds every time kiddos try to peer outside–and the blinds never bend back flat again. 2) As kiddos roll
Boost your internet connectivity!
In preparation for our 2015 West Trip we recently installed a cell phone booster and antenna on the camper. Although we generally like to unplug as much as possible from our phones and computers while camping, for this trip Kristin will be doing some work (for her day job) and we will likely be in some areas where normal cell reception may be spotty at best. Mastering the art of the reroute
On New Year’s Day we announced that we were planning a two-month, 15-state, 6,000-mile camping trip out West. The motivation for this trip was to assist my dad and his wife in an adventure of a lifetime to see some of America’s iconic national parks. However, my dad’s health has gone down hill faster than we all expected and his doctors are limiting his activities while pursuing
UPDATE: Good Sam Trip Planning
UPDATE: While I still love the Good Sam Trip Planner tool, which I highlight below, I recently learned an important lesson. DO NOT LET YOUR MEMBERSHIP EXPIRE! I did and I lost all of my saved trips. I had to completely re-plot our West trip in the program once I renewed our membership. Kind of a pain–and a lot of wasted time. So if you
