Do you need a simple side to go with those brats, hot dogs, or burgers you’ll be grilling up on your next camping trip? Then these loaded camp fries need to be on your menu. They’re not only simple to make, but can be customized to everyone’s tastes. And they are a big hit with the littlest of campers.
For this easy camping side dish, you’ll need the big steak cut potato fries, which you can find in the frozen food section. (But really, any kind of potato fry would work–experimenting with waffle cut fries or tater tots would be fun too.) For the toppings, you’ll want your favorite seasonings (we used garlic powder, salt, pepper, and paprika), your favorite cheese, sour cream, bacon bits, and whatever else you’d like to add.
Begin by browning the steak fries on a griddle. Don’t have a griddle? That’s OK: You could also heat them in the camper oven or in a cast iron skillet over a cooking fire. As the fries defrost, add your choice of seasonings to the fries. If you like things spicy, have fun experimenting with a little chili powder or cayenne pepper dusted over the fries.
Once the fries are golden brown on all sides, cover them with a generous layer of your favorite type of cheese. (I never promised this was a healthy recipe! But when you’re camping, calories don’t count, right?)
After the cheese is melted, you can top the fries with bacon pieces, sour cream, or anything else you like.
Here’s a video of Jarrett prepping these loaded camp fries during our recent camping trip to Prince Gallitzin State Park:

Looks delicious! I’m having a tough time figuring out what to make for meals when we’re camping. I’ve got some picky kiddos & it’s tough to please everyone. I think these would go great with the ham steaks we’re planning to make tomorrow evening. Thanks for the great idea!
Hi Denise–thanks for stopping by! So glad the idea was helpful! I hope you all enjoy your meal and your camping trip!
