Over on Instagram and Facebook we shared about a new pie iron recipe we tried last week: chicken pot pies. I found the recipe on 50Campfires.com. Since it was our first time making it, I didn’t make any modifications, but Jarrett and I were talking about some variations we would like to experiment with in the future.
The ingredient list includes easy prep items like canned mixed veggies, crescent rolls, cream of chicken soup, and already cooked chicken strips–so if you need something super simple to pull together, this recipe would be perfect. I’m also thinking my mom’s homemade pot pie filling would work just as well (but would be much easier to prepare at home before the camping trip). So I’ll have to do some experimenting in the future. But our first attempt turned out perfectly and was quite tasty:
Here are a few other variations that Jarrett and I thought would taste great inside a crescent roll pie iron pot pie:
- shredded beef in a brown gravy sauce with provolone cheese;
- ham and cheese;
- scrambled eggs and cheese would make a fun breakfast twist;
- fruit preserves with a sweetened cream cheese would be like a Pillsbury Toaster Strudel!
But in the meantime, full recipe details for the pie iron pot pies can be found here. Enjoy!
I worked with a girl whose family of 6 would go camping quite often with a group of about 30. They would have “Mountain Pie weekendS” often! They took several loaves of bread and toppings,snacks and drinks and the entire weekend meals were made in a pie iron! Scrambled eggs,cheese and cooked bacon or sausage or peanut butter and fluff or hash browns and eggs for,Breakfast,lunch was ham & cheese,penut butter and banana,etc, supper was. pizza,Reuben,steak & cheese, sloppy joe mixture,chicken with barbecue sauce, pulled chicken or pork, hot dogs and beans,endless possibilities! Dessert was marshmallows fluff and anything you wanted,pie filling, pudding, etc. Everybody loved it!
Hi Gail! That sounds like such a fun idea! My kids would love it! 🙂
