One of our family’s favorite parts about camping is the fun we have cooking around the campfire. And after the main meal is cleared away, it’s time (as Jarrett’s great-grandmother would say) to get the grease out of your neck … i.e., have some dessert! S’mores are generally our family’s first choice, but with the recent development of a gluten-sensitivity for one of our camping kiddos, I needed to find a gluten-free substitute this camping season.
The stores near us don’t yet stock a gluten-free graham cracker alternative (perhaps there isn’t such a thing?), so I started looking for gluten-free cookie products that could work instead. Fortunately, there are a lot of different options available–and I’ve even been lucky enough to find some at our local Amish bent and dent store, at deeply discounted prices no less!
So far we’ve tried sugar, oatmeal, chocolate chip, and double chocolate chip cookies in place of graham crackers. My kiddo says using the gluten-free chocolate chip cookies tastes the most like a regular s’more. (I think he thinks it’s pretty cool that he’s getting to use cookies for his s’mores–and cookies that even have extra chocolate in them!)
You may need to experiment with different gluten-free brands and types of cookies until you find one that you like to make your perfect gluten-free s’mores.
Another gluten-free s’more idea I haven’t yet tried but have seen floating around on Pinterest is apple s’mores. Head over here to be enticed by some yummy-looking pictures.
Aside from the gluten-free options, I also experimented this summer with two of my favorite cookies: Aldi’s knock-offs of the Girl Scouts’ Samoas and Thin Mints. The mint s’more didn’t taste that great in my opinion, so I didn’t even bother posting a picture. I thought the Samoa s’more was tasty though!

Which was your favorite? I have to say the lemon one is calling my name! I don’t know about you, but I sure am looking forward to doing “s’more” experimenting the next time we go camping!
My son is a celiac and they make gf gram crackers you can even get them on Amazon!!
Awesome! Thanks so much for the info! Happy camping! 🙂
using cookies is a great idea! We’ve bought GF graham crackers from Amazon before, but they’re definitely pricey….plus with cookies you can find locally, you don’t have to plan ahead 🙂
Exactly! Enjoy!
I also use the chocolate chip cookie idea for smores. I just make my own favorite recipe and keep the cookies in the freezer to grab and go. I see that you like to shop at Wegman’s- they do have gluten-free graham crackers there, but IMO, they are not that tasty. Stick with the cookies 🙂
Hi Stacy! I don’t think our son even misses the graham crackers anymore because the cookies work so well. And great idea to keep homemade cookies in the freezer! Thanks for stopping by–happy camping! 🙂
