At the beginning of the year we launched this “Favorite Things” series as a way to highlight some of the fun things going on behind the scenes here at The Touring Camper. We try to post daily over on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, but a lot of what we post on social media we never get a chance to share on the blog. So here are some of our favorite moments from August:
1. A day at Presque Isle
Every year we make a trip to one of our favorite Pennsylvania State Parks: Presque Isle in Erie. This peninsula site is the most visited Pennsylvania state park, and it was just voted the best freshwater beach in the nation. We love that it’s just a few hours away so we can get the beach experience without going all the way to the coast.
This past weekend we escaped the rain back home to soak up the last of the August rays. Kite flying, castle building, and chair sitting–it was the perfect Sunday.
2. Our girl Syd
Although saying good-bye to our Golden Retriever Sydney was the worst day this month, the memories we have of our 11.5 years together are a treasure. She was just a pup the first time we took her camping in our little pop-up. She proved to be one of the best camping, hiking, canoeing, and adventuring dogs you could ask for. RIP sweet girl.
3. A visit to Stan Hywet
For a belated anniversary date, Jarrett and I headed over to Akron to explore Stan Hywet, an historic mansion that Goodyear co-founder F.A. Seiberling built for his family during the early 1900s. The 65-room tudor revival manor house is situated on approximately 70 acres of sprawling grounds and manicured gardens. We loved the behind-the-scenes “Nooks and Crannies” tour that let us explore everything from the basement laundry to the tower infirmary. If you are a Downton Abbey fan, be sure to add this stop to your touring bucket list. (So we dropped the ball and forgot to get a picture in front of the house–sheesh! These two pictures in the garden areas will have to do.)
4. A canoeing camping trip
Jarrett and his scout troop headed out at the beginning of the month for a four-day canoe trip along the Allegheny River. It was hot and they had long days of paddling, but they pushed through and emerged with bragging rights (including Jarrett’s new claim to fame of solo padding the gear canoe, as pictured below).
